High School Musical Hits the Stage: Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes at Mannix College

Mannix College, has managed a musical masterpiece and pulled off a special production of Disney's High School Musical this month.

The residential college is affiliated with Monash University, located on Clayton Campus where the show is based.

This production, which follows the lives of high school students navigating friendships, romance, and their passions for music and sport, became a stage production after captivating audiences as a film in 2006.

For the past two months, the cast and crew at Mannix College have worked to create a memorable performance. Production director and Mannix College Student Society (MCSS) culture representative Darby Stoffell shared insights into the rigorous process.

“It is a huge undertaking- as MCSS culture representative, it’s my role to oversee the production, but it truly is a collective effort," she said.

"Everyone involved, from the production crew to the performers, brings their all. It’s their dedication that makes this show possible."

The journey began with an application for rights in the first semester, followed by three weeks of auditions and a week of callbacks. As the second semester approached, an intensive first week of rehearsals set the stage for a demanding schedule of three rehearsals per week for two months.

Crew member and costume manager Annabelle Gilling, said she was excited about the process.

“Rehearsals have been intense but incredibly rewarding," Gilling said.

"We’ve bonded as a cast and have pushed ourselves to bring the energy and enthusiasm of the original production to our version."

"The audience can expect a high-energy, feel-good show with iconic songs,” she said.
