Melbourne has such a wide and vibrant range of activities to enjoy all year round. Here are your must-do free events in the Victorian capital this month:

The Rest is Up to You: State Library Victoria until July 7

This interactive exhibit comes to life at Melbourne’s iconic state library, with performance lectures, shows and panel discussions about the Melbourne Fringe Festival through the years.

Each day brings different interactive events or you can explore the exhibit solo.

A wide array of art-forms are on display that have been included at the Fringe or related events. This includes sound and video installations exploring the past history of the event and plans for it into the future.

Melbourne Craft Fair: Queen Victoria Market on April 29

The talented artists and designers of Melbourne are meeting in one place this month to show off their creations.

The fair will include unique art, ceramics, jewellery, macramé, homewares, dog accessories, perfumes and more.

Music Matinee: Scots’ Church Melbourne on April 18

Attend a live lunchtime concert by the wildly talented musicians of the Australian National Academy of Music, Melbourne University Conservatorium and more.

Music Matinee has a mission to “bring live and free music to the City of Melbourne” and to support artists in the process.

The event runs on multiple Tuesdays through the year, including this April event when soprano Esther Gresswell and pianist Jenny Lu will perform.

This is the ideal lunch-break activity, with no bookings required.

Hawker 88 Night Market: Queen Victoria Market on April 12, 19 and 26

These night markets are bringing Asian cuisine, music and entertainment to Melbourne throughout the month, with each market celebrating a different Asian community and cuisine.

Head along to the Queen Vic Markets to see the beautiful lanterns, vibrant atmosphere and treat yourself to some delicious food.

Break the Binaries: Science Gallery Melbourne until June 17

Coming all the way from the United Kingdom, this exhibit features domestic and international artists to display an artistic view of gender and identity.

The exhibit explores intersectional themes of science, technology, race, culture and more. It includes video, sound, sculpture and other multimedia elements.

Be sure to not only explore the exhibit but also attend the accompanying interactive events such as this Friday Night Social with live music from queer artists.
