The State Library of Victoria's 'Melbourne Out Loud' exhibition is a journey through the history of the city, visualised through the iconic photographs of Rennie Ellis.

The exhibition depicts our city’s unique character which has been, and continues to be, defined by so many dimensions such as sport, fashion, art and the beach. Ellis’ photographs capture the essence of what makes Melbourne one of a kind and documents its vibrant personality.

In this collection, “Ellis sought out the extraordinary within the ordinary” offering a vivid portrayal of “his love for the city and its people.”

One visitor Charlie admired the visual history he had access to.

“It's cool looking at history…and what different places throughout time look like,” he said.

Another patron, a visitor from Ireland named Sophia, appreciated learning the context of the city.

“It's really cool to have a bit of background [and witness] the cultural impact that musicians and artists have had on the city”, she said.

The exhibition gives a glimpse into the special elements that make Melbourne the vibrant cosmopolitan city it has been for decades. Melbourne may not be a city characterised by jaw dropping landmarks and mega skyscrapers but Ellis' collections depict what Melbourne's character really is: the spirited intersection of its people, culture and lifestyle.

This free exhibition continues in Melbourne until January 2025.
