Victoria Police is investigating a death at RMIT's city campus, which saw areas of the university cordoned off this afternoon.

A man's body was located on Stewart Street, an internal campus road near the university's College of Business.

The victim's age is not known, or if they were a student or staff member of the university.

Classes were cancelled in the wake of the tragedy and students reported being shocked and confused.

"There are a lot of versions of the story going around and no one is sure of what has exactly happened," an RMIT student, who did not wish to be named, told MOJO News. 

"Classes in the building have been cancelled and even the entrance to that area has been closed off."

RMIT University posted an official statement on its Facebook page in response to the death.

"We are working with Victoria Police to understand the nature of the incident, including further support for the individual’s family," the post read.

"The safety of our community and their support is our primary focus. People are asked to avoid the area with back entrance of Building 80 and Stewart Street are now closed.

There is no immediate danger and no threat to staff or students. Police and emergency services are in attendance have the situation under control."

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the man's body was found around 12.30pm.

"The death is not believed to be suspicious and police will prepare a report for the coroner," Senior Sergeant Nicole Warner said.

RMIT provided the contact details of counselling services to any students or staff who were affected by the tragedy.
